Nokia’s 3310: the greatest phone of all time

Nokia 3310

The success of the 3210 led Nokia to create the device that gets phone lovers the world over misty eyed: the 3310. This sleek, compact phone had all the features of the 3210, but in a smaller and lighter frame (133g vs 153g), many customisation options thanks to swappable front and rear panels, along with many other improvements to the internals and software.

It was the out-right resilience of this iconic handset that today puts it in the mobile phone hall of fame, that and the fact that it sold over 126 million units since its launch September 1st 2000.

Nokia Lumia 930 Review

0

IMG_0048 copyIt has been three years since Nokia entered its Windows Phone partnership with Microsoft, and is just months since Microsoft bought the Finnish giant for about £4.6bn. Over the course of their special relationship we have seen no shortage of colourful Lumia devices, covering all sizes and budgets, in a bid to remind us that Nokia’s ability to make quality phones hasn’t diminished. The Lumia 930 is the latest of these, and the first to feature the long-awaited 8.1 update. Read on to see if the software can do the hardware justice.

IMG_0001 copy
Nokia has been slowly ramping up the photographic credentials of their Windows Phone lineup, with the Lumia 925 easy rivalling, if not outdoing efforts from Samsung and HTC.  Their latest top-end handset, the Lumia 1020 totally out-does all of these rivals by packing a 41MP “Pureview” sensor with a Zeiss lens.  Read on to find out just how sharp that snapper is, and whether all those pixels matter.

The Gadget Show Live @Christmas 2013

IMG_0132IT’S CHRISTMAS! Or at least it will be in less than two short months.  I’m not one for pre-empting the joys of the festive season and tend to avoid anything festive until mid-December, but a chance to play with some of the latest tech due to hit our shelves is an opportunity I’ll never pass up.  After visiting The Gadget Show Live at the NEC earlier in the year I was eager to see what the Earl’s Court London event would have in store.

Nokia Lumia 925

IMG_3981 copy
For Nokia it’s either back to the glory days, or certain failure.  If you’d asked me 2 or 3 years ago what Nokia would do to save themselves from missing the smartphone train, I’d have likely said they’d have to switch to Android.  Of course, they chose to partner with Windows Phone instead, a huge improvement over Symbian but a decision that has yet to be vindicated. Their true saviour however lies in attempting to out-do the photographic credentials of every other smartphone on the market with their PureView camera tech. Can a good snapper make the Lumia 925 a great smartphone? Read on for my view.

Nokia 620 + JBL Powerup wireless speaker review

0

IMG_3830 copyHaving already looked at the larger Lumia 820, we decided to bundle the 620 review together with the nicely matched JBL Powerup wireless speaker, as in many ways they belong together. Not like their eyes met across the room at your friends party, they’re literally built to work together, apart from the wireless charging not being compatible with the phone, but we’ll get back to that later.

gsl2013The Gadget Show Live has once again returned to Birmingham and is now, in it’s 5th year is becoming a staple of the UK’s yearly technology show diary.  It’s by far the most consumer-focused and plays host to both manufacturers showing off their latest wares as well as a host of retailers with huge range of gadgetry to check out and buy, including more mobile phone and tablet accessories than you can shake a (USB) stick at.

Nokia Lumia 820

Nokia Lumia 820Firstly an apology to Nokia – I left you in the days of the 3210 when apps were limited to Snake and sending texts was cutting edge and haven’t yet been back. I just haven’t been excited by anything Nokia came up with in recent years and don’t even get me started on my thoughts on Symbian – that’s for another post. Roll forward to 2012 and I started becoming increasingly interested in seeing what all the hubbub was about now that they’ve joined forces with Microsoft on the latest Lumia line-up.  Finally I got my hands on one to have more than the 5 minutes retailers afford in the shape of the rather lovely looking Lumia 820 – now to see how it fairs against everything else I’ve seen recently.
