Vodafone Smart Tab II

2

IMG_3271 copyThe head-honcho at TechNow has nervously given me the new affordable 7” tablet from Vodafone to review. The last time I handled anything made by Vodafone, it could only make calls, had a battery life of around one week and an external aerial that you could chew on. The Vodafone Smart Tab II looks anything but vintage and is also very affordable. Over the past week I have been using the Smart Tab to show you that it’s not just a huge smart phone with no ability to make calls.

Sound & Vision: The Bristol Show 2013

0

bsavshowOn Sunday 24th of February I travelled down to Bristol to have a look at many things I can’t afford, and many things I wish I could – also known as Sound & Vision: The Bristol Show.  Hosted by What Hi-Fi magazine and the audio specialist retailer Audio-T the show promised to be a wealthy selection of the greatest audio and video tech available today.  Luckily I wasn’t disappointed.

The HTC 8X

0

IMG_3110 copyHTC started in a fairly low-key fashion with their first generation of Windows Phones. The Titan & Radar didn’t do a great job of selling the design strengths of Microsoft’s latest OS.  Fast-forward two years and HTC has finally released devices that do justice to the elegant simplicity of Windows 8.  Its flagship is the 8X, a handset that I’ve been looking forward to. Let’s see if it can finally win me over to Windows on a mobile.

Dear Apple – How many iPhone 5’s does it take to get a ‘new’ one?

0

applestoreip5Well there we go. Number six. What am I talking about? Let me set the scene.

Back in February of 2012 I Pre ordered the iPhone 5, ecstatic that I would be one of the first to receive this beautiful piece of technological wizardry.

Once it appeared on my doorstep delivered by a generic UPS delivery man, I immediately ran upstairs to delicately open the small black box which contained my latest of gadgets.

Blackberry Z10 – Unboxing

0
Hot on the heals of my previous HTC 8X unboxing, Here’s my latest one of the new Blackberry Z10 – It’s a little longer as I put on a preview of some of the BB10 tutorial and swipe features at the end.  Of course a full review will follow soon once I’ve had time to fully experience BB’s new OS, but for now here you go….

Edifier Spinnaker speakers

0

Edifier_Spinnaker_e30_Two-620x496These aren’t the first speakers I’ve tested from Edifier, but present a much more high-end design quality audio solution than the Aurora 2.1 speaker set I tried previously.  The Spinnaker series could be a companion for TVs, computers as well as having Bluetooth capabilities for music streaming, but can their audio quality keep up with their imposing design? I’ve spent a couple of weeks with them to find out how they stack up.

Video Games: America’s new ‘Sin Tax’

0

mortalmikeyI hear Barack Obama has agreed funding research into violent video games in the wake of another school massacre. How many times do we need to flog this dead horse? Perhaps Barack should fund research that determines whether violent games make young men and women join the REAL army to shoot at real people ‘legally’. Some people have told me that this funding isn’t just about video games violence but a push for research on all things that contribute to this kind of violence, which I think is fine.

In the grand scheme of things I find even mentioning violent video games an absolute insult and hypocritical. I’d like to think we’re better than this, that we are passing on what we’ve learnt from the actions of our elders and have learnt from their mistakes.

Hauppauge HD PVR 2 ‘Gaming Edition’

0

Hauppauge HD PVR 2Hauppauge have been a well regarded name in the field of PC video capture for many years now.  My first ever analogue PC-TV tuner was made by them and back in 1999 seemed like a cutting-edge piece of hardware.  Hauppauge have since branched out in to other forms of video capture and ever since people have become competitive with online console gaming, there’s been a desire to capture this footage in a universal way – The HD PVR ‘Gaming edition’ is Hauppauge’s 3rd attempt at such a beast, so let’s see how it fares.

Interview – Pollyanna Woodward

0

PollyannaSince her arrival on Channel 5’s The Gadget Show in 2010, Pollyanna Woodward has risen to become the beautiful and familiar face of gadgetry on UK TV.  Despite having done a mix of different  tv jobs and even getting to the last 13 of ‘Popstars: The Rivals’ in 2002, Polly has a real passion for gadgets.  I was lucky to get the chance to pose her some questions and find out what she really thinks of mobile tech.

Nokia Lumia 820

0

Nokia Lumia 820Firstly an apology to Nokia – I left you in the days of the 3210 when apps were limited to Snake and sending texts was cutting edge and haven’t yet been back. I just haven’t been excited by anything Nokia came up with in recent years and don’t even get me started on my thoughts on Symbian – that’s for another post. Roll forward to 2012 and I started becoming increasingly interested in seeing what all the hubbub was about now that they’ve joined forces with Microsoft on the latest Lumia line-up.  Finally I got my hands on one to have more than the 5 minutes retailers afford in the shape of the rather lovely looking Lumia 820 – now to see how it fairs against everything else I’ve seen recently.

What now for HMV and the independent record store?

0

hmv-dog-nipperToday music retailer HMV announced it was to appoint an administrator, essentially confirming the end of the High Street music chain as we know it. With specialist outlets continuing to operate in towns around the UK this marks a significant change in the consumption of music and the impact that will subsequently have on both our High Streets and artists.
